Startup salaries in Switzerland: how to compare an offer
Sources checked:
There is no single reliable salary for a “Swiss startup job”. Your profession, responsibilities, experience, location and workload all affect what an offer means. Compare a specific role rather than a startup-wide average.
Use an official benchmark
Salarium, from the Federal Statistical Office, estimates gross monthly pay and its dispersion for a selected job and personal profile. Use the same region, occupation and experience when comparing scenarios. Its statistical estimate is a reference, not an offer from the company and not a startup-only salary survey. Put cash offers on the same basis
Ask whether the quoted amount is monthly or annual, gross or net, and which workload it assumes. Confirm the number of salary payments, guaranteed cash, variable bonus and the bonus conditions. Compare the same workload; a full-time figure and an actual part-time payment cannot be compared directly. Keep relocation costs and benefits separate from fixed salary.
Keep equity separate
Record the cash compensation first. Then examine any shares or options through the plan documents: vesting, purchase or exercise cost, restrictions and what happens when you leave. An estimated future exit value is not cash available to pay rent today.
Check what the listing actually says
Startup Valleys displays pay only when a source publishes it. Structured salary data additionally needs a currency, amount and period. A missing salary means the source did not provide usable pay data; ask the employer rather than substituting a guessed range. Try the official calculator for a comparable statistical profile.
